  • c3000BC - Trephination was undertaken in nearly all parts of the world and continued until the Middle Ages.
  • c2820BC - SHEN NUNG born. A Chinese emperor, physician and reformer who originated acupuncture and wrote the great herbal Pen Tsoa.
  • c1700BC - The Smith Papyrus, an Egyptian medical treatise, was written. It contains the first record of the nervous system.
  • c520BC -  ALCMAEON OF CROTON, a Greek philosopher and physiologist, dissected animals and studied their brains, and discovered the optic nerve.
  • 460BC -  HIPPOCRATES born. A physician in ancient Greece, regarded as the father of medicine, who separated medicine from superstition. His Corpus Hippocraticum includes treatments for all medical conditions known at this time.
  • 355BC HEROPHILUS OF CHALCEDON born. A Greek physician from Asia Minor who, while working inAlexandria, was the first to recognize the brain as the center of the nervous system and seat of intelligence.
  • 340BC ERASISTRATUS born. One of the first anatomists at the Alexandrian school who accurately described complicated structures, such as the convolutions and the ventricles of the brain.
  • 25BC AULUS CORNELIUS CELSUS born. A Roman physician who wrote De Medicina, a treatise divided into three parts: dietetic, pharmaceutical, and surgical. It contained the first accounts of hydrotherapy, lateral lithotomy, and insanity.98AD
