Abstract

Introduction:

Cognitive testing of children with ASD is frequently unreliable as they may not perform skills despite having the ability to do so. This is confounded by the fact that they may have co-morbid Intellectual Disability. Adaptive function evaluates usual performance rather than ability. Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale (VABS) assess adaptive function and maladaptive behaviour in children. Lower scores in Socialization relative to other domains, significant sub-domain score discrepancies have been consistently reported of children with ASD from the developed world. There is paucity of literature on adaptive profiles of children with ASD from the developing world.

Objectives: To evaluate the adaptive profiles of 2-9 year old Indian Children with ASD Methodology: In a Hospital based observational study 2-9 year olds with diagnosed ASD by Expert comprehensive assessment were evaluated by VABS. Adaptive behaviour composite, V scale scores, Adaptive levels, Maladaptive Behaviour index and Maladaptive Critical Items were determined. Statistical analysis will be by SPSS 19.

Results: Study group comprised of 100 children newly diagnosed with ASD, belonging to lower socio-economic strata with poor parental literacy.  Majority had severe ASD and co-morbid Intellectual disability. They had not yet stated intervention. The adaptive profiles of majority displayed similar unevenness in performances in different domains especially communication and social interaction.

Conclusion: The adaptive function deviation seen in children with ASD is similar trans- culturally.
