Abstract
Plasma Galanin and Neuropeptide Y Levels in Children with Convulsive Diseases and Their Signifiances

Background and Aims: Acute behavioral seizures is one of the commonest clinical symptoms. Neuromodulators have been explored as potential alternatives to classic antiepileptic drugs. Their physiological function is believed to control the balance between excitation and inhibition in the CNS. Numerous neuropetides have been proposed to have direct and indirect effects on epilepsy and seizures. although its mode of action in epilepsy is unclear. We study the levels and relationship of Galanin(GAL)、Neuropeptide Y(NPY)in plasma in children convulsion. Methods:136 children with convulsive diseases were studied as following: obtaining the samples of plasma in the 1st and 7th day after being in hospital. We investigated the changes of GAL and NPY in plasma with enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results:(1)In children with convulsive diseases ( febrile seizure, epilepsy ) GAL and NPY in plasma were increased. GAL and NPY were higher in the seventh day than in the first day in plasma. (2) GAL and NPY in different types of febrile seizures and epileptic seizures were no difference. (3) The levels of GAL and NPY in plasma were correlated to the frequency and duration of convulsion. Conclusion:GAL and NPY in plasma are elevated in children with convulsive diseases and have correlation to the frequency and duration of convulsion, changing in the different course of convulsion.
