Abstract

Background: Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a non-progressive disorder due to insult in the developing brain. This causes disorder in muscle tone, posture and movement. CP is usually diagnosed by clinical features. Though risk factors are identified in about 75% of cases, but in many cases the etiology remains unclear. CT Scanning helps to elucidate the underlying CNS abnormalities. Sometimes there are differences between clinical features and the underlying CT findings.

Objectives: The objective was to detect CT Scanning findings in different types of CP.

Methodology: This is a prospective and cross-sectional study conducted on 525 Children registered at Disability Service and Training Center attached to Rangpur Mother and Children Hospital. CP was diagnosed by using an Interview Schedule. During a two years period from 1.1.2016 to 31.12.2017 CT scanning of brain was performed purposefully to all children to detect the underlying CNS abnormalities. The purpose was explained to parents and consent taken before performing the tests. The children were in induced sedation during the procedure.

Result: Grey matter injury (GMI) especially cortical atrophy was the commonest abnormality and was common in spastic CP. White matter injury (WMI) was common in ataxic CP. There was much overlapping of findings. Other abnormalities were different types of malformations and vascular injuries. The findings differed from those of Australia Study Group.

Conclusion: GMI is the common abnormality in CP but there are much overlapping between CT Scanning findings and clinical features.

Mode of Presentation: Plenary session.
