Abstract

Background: Childhood seizure is common cause of morbidity and mortality in children and also a common cause of hospital admission. Our aim of study is to find the clinicoaetiological profile of childhood seizure in tertiary care hospital.

Material and Methods: This was a hospital based prospective, observational study conducted at NBMCH, Darjeeling, a tertiary level hospital situated in sub Himalayan region of West Bengal.Enrolled patients includes all admitted cases in pediatrics department presenting with seizures aged 2 month to 12 years over a period of one year from 1 July 2017 to 30thJune 2018. Different variables includes patients details, clinical presentation, sociodemographic data, relevant laboratory analysis, neuroimaging, clinical course and final outcome. The study was approved by the Institutional Ethical Committee.Data was recorded in predesigned proforma and analyzed using SPSS.

Results: Total 100 children with seizures were included in the study among this 57 boys (57%) and 43 girls (43%).77 children present with GTCS (77%) rest present with focal type of seizure ( 23%). The commonest aetiologies were febrile seizures, acute seizures due to neuroinfection, epilepsy syndromes and generalized epilepsy disorders. Neurodevelopmental morbidities (high rates of seizures, multiple seizure types, associated motor disability, and poor cognition) were found to be significant predictors of difficult seizure remission.

Discussion/Conclusion:

Proper study on clinicoetiological and sociodemographic profile of seizures can help in proper understanding of the disease, for immediate and long term treatment.
