Abstract

Easily fatigability is a common impairment affecting adolescents and adults with cerebral palsy (CP). Adolescents with bilateral spastic cerebral palsy (BSCP) develop fatigue over time resulting in reducing physical activity and low level of endurance. Aerobic training has wide varieties of tool which improves the neuromuscular and cardiovascular systems results in improved power, endurance and self-esteem. The aim of the study is to study effect of stationary bike as an aerobic tool to improve endurance among adolescents with BSCP. Methods: The current study is randomized controlled study, eighteen adolescents with BSCP, their ages ranged from 12-16 years were divided randomly and equally into study and control groups. They received therapy during eight successive weeks. The control group received isolated muscle strengthening for antigravity muscles of lower limbs while the study group received the same protocol in addition to stationary bike training. Normalized maximum voluntary torque (MVT) and rate of decline of repetitive peak torque (PT) were measure by isokinetic dynamometer before and after therapy for each subject. Results: Normalized MVT and rate of decline of repetitive PT showed a significant improvement in both groups post treatment, moreover study group showed significant results in the measuring variables compared to control group post treatment. Clinical implementations; the current study showed that simple aerobic devices as stationary bike training improve muscle endurance among adolescents with BSCP. Significant results could be related to improvement of muscle strength, firing rate of lower limbs musculatures at low intensity profile.
