Abstract

Background-Antiepileptic drugs are often associated with abnormal bone mineral density (12-65%) compared with healthy controls. There is paucity of study in Indian scenario to support this evidence.

Methodology -An analytical matched case control study undergoing in our department and expected to complete by October 2018. Out of total sample size of 100 (50:50), till now 78(42 case:36 control) patients were enrolled for the study after satisfying predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, investigated with serum total calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, free T3,free T4,TSH and DEXA Scan for Anteroposterior Spine and dual femur. All the relevant data were collected, validated and interim analysis done (Mann Whitney U test) in SPSS v 25.

Results- Mean rank of serum calcium(26.98), phosphorus(26.46) among cases is higher than that of control group for serum calcium (23.76) and phosphorus (24.37) and not statistically significant, evidenced by U = 270.500, p = 0.221 and U = 284.500, p = 0.310) respectively. Similarly serum alkaline phosphatase, TSH,DEXA for A- P spine and dual femur not statistically significant between two groups (p > 0.05). But serum fT4 and fT3 had lower mean rank in cases than controls which is statistically significant as evidenced by U = 229.000, p= 0.05 and U =89.000, p= 0.010 respectively.

Conclusion-Although this study is in contrast to earlier literatures, better bone mineral metabolism in cases  could be due to small sample size as it is an ongoing study.
