Abstract
Introduction:The management of Cerebral palsy is still a topic of research and advances in its management are still a need of the hour. The holistic approach including neurologist, developmental pediatrician, orthopedician, rehabilitation therapists etc have shown considerable improvement in the management, but various lacunae needs to be addressed. Ayurveda , the Indian traditional medicine is an individualized medicine system working on the concept of health as the homeostasis of three humors of the body, whose equilibrium is influenced by the nature, climate, food and regimen of the person.
Methods: The present study is a nonrandomized controlled clinical trial in children with Spastic Cerebral palsy upto 12 years of age. The control group was given physiotherapy and speech therapy alone and the study group was given Ayurveda along with the above therapies. Ayurveda therapy includes internal medications and oil and powder massages, medicated enema and oil and medicated paste application on head.
Results: Both the groups were assessed before and after one year of management using parameters like Ashworth scale, TDSC chart,Activities of daily living and goniometry. The results were analysed using t test and it showed a statistically significant difference in the observations(p<0.001) of both the groups.
Conclusion: The group which got Ayurvedic management along with conventional therapies had more and sustained reduction in spasticity along with earlier attainment of new milestones of development and reduction in associated comorbidities.
