Background: Neuropsychological studies confirmed that patients with epilepsy are at considerable risk for cognitive impairment and emotional disturbances.  Most cognitive impairments in children are motor speed, mental speed, attention, language, learning & memory difficulties.

Aim:The present study designed to evaluate the influence of neuropsychological functions in childhood common epilepsy types Generalized Tonic-Clonic Seizures (GTCS), Complex Partial Seizure 3.CPS and Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE).

Method: Three groups (1.GTCS-27, 2.CPS – 17, and 3.TLE-30), of 74 children with epilepsy, 49 boys and 25 girls, with a mean age of 11.77 (±2.19) years were screened and selected from Bangalore Neuro Centre, Bangalore, India. They were administered the following standardized Neuropsychological tests:  Finger tapping (FT), Controlled Oral Word Association (COWA), Category Fluency (CT), Colour Trails CT-1 &2), Digit vigilance (DV), Rey’s Auditory Verbal Learning and memory (RAVLT), Logical Memory (LM),  Memory for Designs (MFD). Depression was recorded using the 20-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies–Depression Scale (CES-D). Mean, SD, One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc test were used analyze the difference among the sub-type group children with epilepsy.

Results: Results indicated that the children with TLE performed worse on logical memory  (Immediate and delayed recall) and visual memory (immediate and delayed recall). Children with GS and TLE demonstrate significant deficit in focused and divided attention. In addition, children with CPS and TLE significantly affected visual immediate memory and sustained attention.  In summary, the present study reveals that children with TLE explain considerable impairment in cognitive function and struggling with depression.
