Abstract

Introduction:Risk of siblings of autistic childrenis reported in 3-8%.  Recent research has focused on finding EEG markers to identify high risk younger siblings at early state with the hope that early interventions might ameliorate phenotypic expression. Neural integration processes are reflected in various frequency domains of individual EEGs.  High frequency of gamma power activity is required for perceptual and cognitive tasks.

Objective: To determine the early EEG neural marker in siblings of children diagnosed with autism.

Methodology: Siblings of autistic childrenwereat high risk and enrolledas casesat 3 to 4 month of age.  Age matched control group werewithout ASD siblings.EEG was performed for 3-5 minutes on both the groups in alert resting state.  We compared the amount of different wave band over the frontal region of case and control ground to note remarkable difference among the high risk children.

Results:  On leading question to the parents, mild problems like denial of breast-feeding in wake state, sucks only in drowsy state, quiet in mother’s lap only, poor social smile, poor eye contact and poor sleep was reported in a few among the cases. On the EEG data analysis, the high risk childrenhadsignificant low EEG power indifferent frequency bands compared to that of the control group.

Conclusion: Early identification of EEG neural marker would be helpful for the caregivers to guide early intervention.  Irreversible phenotypic expression might be halted through this procedure.Further evaluation with larger population is required.
