Abstract

Background: Validation studies of Ages and Stages Questionnaire-3 (ASQ-3) and ASQ- Social Emotional (SE) from high income countries have found it to be a reliable developmental screening tool. Acceptable psychometric properties were also reported in a single Indian study in which children between 4 – 24 monthswere screened. However, there is paucity of international longitudinal studies on developmental surveillance using ASQ, and none from India.

Objectives: To compare the proportion of high risk and low risk infants who fail inany ASQ-3/ ASQ SE screening on 4 occasions (3.5, 6, 9 and 12 months corrected age) and to study the correlation between infants who fail with specific demographic and clinical variables.

Methodology: Eligible neonates were recruited and a registry maintained. Telephonic remainders were given for each visit. At the first and second visit ASQ-3 and ASQ SE were administered by a trained investigator. Since the study is ongoing the third and fourth visits are to be completed. Relevant history and a focused examination consisting of anthropometry and detection of clinical pallor were done. Any infant failing ASQ-3 screening are discontinued from the surveillance, undergo an expert evaluation and are started on appropriate intervention.

Results: Only two high risk infants (6%) failed the first ASQ-3 screen and none failed the second screen. Results of the remaining surveillance and correlation will be presented on completion.

Conclusion: This will be made on completion of the developmental surveillance with ASQ-3.
