About Topic:
Exposure to toxins and substances during critical periods of early neurodevelopment may have lasting impact on brain maturation and cognitive functioning. Globally, evidence supports the role of prenatal exposure to substances, including heavy metals, pesticides, air pollutants, and drugs of abuse, in altering neurodevelopmental outcomes. In particular, research has highlighted how prenatal alcohol exposure and other environmental toxins disrupt white matter microstructure and neural connectivity, leading to risk of long-term impairments in executive functions, memory, and behaviour. This talk synthesizes findings from longitudinal studies and neurobiological insights, emphasizing the critical need for preventive strategies and targeted interventions in vulnerable populations.
Learning Objectives :
1-Critical periods for impact of exposures
2- Interaction of toxins and socioeconomic factors (especially poverty and nutrition)
3-Focus on prevention
