Children’s Medical Home in China (CHMC) – Promoting Early Development of Chinese Children

Background: Despite advances in infant mortality and life expectancy, there are major gaps in the current health systems of China for supports for children with neurodevelopmental disabilities.

Methods: We partnered with practicing pediatric health professionals and children’s hospitals with two aims: 1.Utilize global mobile applications for medical professional education in China. 2. Implement an engagement model focusing on neurodevelopment surveillance of children at-risk for disabilities in functioning.

Since 2017, we piloted the Children’s Medical Home China(CMHC) Project using virtual training models . Our efforts included a central continuing education information center, a virtual training platform, and case-based training sessions with pre and post training evaluation.

Results: WeChat group registration has increased annually and CMHC training information has been disseminated to 52,725 healthcare professionals and 274,868 parents, see table 1.

Since 2017, 195 webinars have been presented with attendance ranging between 3,000 to 104,000 participants .Importantly 1,915 physicians have completed training in focused examinations from newborn to 36 months old. Of 711 participants completing post-training questionnaires, 81% considered that training met their learning goals; 97% believed that training was extremely helpful for improving diagnoses and management practices.

Conclusion: During the last 5 years, CMHC has established different virtual training models for medical professional education to promote community public health partnerships for children at highest risk for disabilities in urban and rural China. Current activities include case based management webinars for diagnosing and managing autism, global developmental delay, cerebral palsy, communication and learning disorders . We are also developing parenting support modules.
